Prof Carolyn Semmler

Professor Carolyn Semmler is director of the Applied Cognition and Experimental Psychology Lab (ACEP Lab) at the University of Adelaide. Her background in modelling complex human cognition means that she can communicate across discipline boundaries and is at ease working with complex problem sets. She has a long track record of being able to take real-world problems and break them down for analysis and generation of novel and innovative solutions – and has been supported by Industry and category 1 funding totalling $4.43 million in the last 5 years. She is skilled in thinking through the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to specific technologies and innovations - ensuring that solutions will work through to adoption. Her research in human decision making has been applied across medical, legal and national security contexts – with key contributions to international guidance for legal practitioners. She has an outstanding record in bringing research insights into the public domain and regularly contributes to parliamentary inquiries, social media, public lectures and traditional media outlets on her research at the intersection between new technology and human behaviour – including the recent ‘Responsible AI – Your Questions Answered’ report from ATSE.
